Make Your Own Jacob’s Ladder

One of the most mesmerizing and simple electrical experiments you can do at home is the classic “Jacob’s Ladder”: two metal rods bending away from one another, with arcs of electricity running repeatedly from the bottom to the top.  This fellow on YouTube has made a rather fetching version encased in a glass tube for his desktop:
